Athlete Quotes - Day 3

Tim Seaman - men's 20 km race walk
"I'm more suited for the 20k walk than the 50k. I don't like the 50k as much. I really expected this to come down to Curt (Clausen), John (Nunn) and myself, but I didn't know what the order of finish would be. I didn't expect the outcome to turn out like it did. I'm really happy to come out of this with my third national title. It seems that I win this event in the even years and Curt wins it in the odd years. I'm really looking forward to 2004!"

Elizabeth Jackson - women's 3,000 meter steeplechase
"I've worked hard to win this race. I went out and ran the pace my coach wanted me to run. Hopefully I can keep getting faster. I would like to keep setting PR's. There are some great runners in the U.S. this year."

Lisa Nye - women's 3,000 meter steeplechase
"I felt great about the race. I just wish this event were a part of the 2004 Olympics. This was a nice way for me to finish out my career. My strategy was to come out here and have a great time. It was a blast."

Lisa Aguilera - women's 3,000 meter steeplechase
"In the last lap I was trying to get up to third place. I knew if I got up to the third place girl in the last 100 meters, I could out kick her. It was a pretty good way to finish the season. I was hoping to run a little faster, but I'm happy."

Charles Clinger - men's high jump
"I jumped well. I land deep down the pit. I'm happy with 7-6. All I wanted was a shot to win. The conditions were fine until the end. We had a little head wind that threw us off."

Sandra Glover-women's 400mH
"I had a good race. I tried to run strong on the back stretch but we were running into a strong head wind on the stretch and around the turn. I chopped on the sixth hurdle but one thing about hurdles is it is how you react to a mistake. I didn't let it phase me. I kept going and tried to run strong over the last four hurdles. The time was not as fast as I would like but it was what God wanted me to run today. I am happy I got through the last two rounds."

Brenda Taylor - women's 400mH
"I thought it would take an act of God to make the finals, and low and behold I made the finals."

Megan Addy, - women's 400mH
"I'm happy to be competing for the U.S."

James Carter, men's 400-meter hurdles
"The conditions were still a little windy. But the wind didn't have that much affect on me. I wasn't looking for a particular time. I was just out looking for a victory. I wanted to get out fast and aggressive."

Joey Woody, men's 400-meter hurdles
"I felt good and confident for the first half of the race. Then at hurdle 8, (Eric Thomas) and I collided. That threw me off just a bit. It hurt me a little bit. But I came back strong. I will be running in Oslo Friday."

Eric Thomas, men's 400-meter hurdles
"All three of us were together for the first part of the race. Then Joey (Woody) and I collided and it all went haywire. Things like that happen in a race. This threw me off just a bit. I'm OK. I'm going to Europe to run fast times."

David Krummenacker - men's 800m
"Today I wanted to run a smooth race. Luckily, it stayed even pace. Everything has been progressing along smoothly."

Derrick Peterson - men's 800m
"I came in here with one goal in mind: to win. I'm a little hard on myself. It can be anybody's race. I have more of a distance base. I think that the stronger guys definitely prevailed over the speed bases runners."

Khadevis Robinson - men's 800m
"I wanted to get a good race. It's been a rough year. I just wanted to focus on myself today."

Walter Davis - men's Triple Jump
"Every time I jump, I'm expecting a big jump, but I didn't expect it to be that big (57-08.50). When the crowd got into it, I got hyped. The long jumpers had a good show. We wanted to have a good show in the triple jump, too."

Nathan Leeper - men's High Jump
"The foot problem is gone, but this is only the third or fourth meet I've had. My main goal every year is to jump higher and to jump high when you are supposed to. Every time I go out there to try and win."

Ian Waltz - men's discus
"I was happy with my performance. I have been throwing well in my last five to six meets. I didn't throw the shot put well last night. But I switch to the spin throw. I have been throwing at 66 feet. I have the potential to get close to 70 feet."

Adam Setliff - men's discus
"I went back to school this year and didn't start training until three and a half weeks ago."

(Note...Setliff earned a degree from Rice University in English Literature.)

"I didn't start training until May 22. I did cut it a little close. I'm happy with the win."

John Godina - men's discus
"I only had three practices coming into today. If I would have had a couple of more chances, I could have done better."

Nicole Teter - women's 800
"My plan was to set the pace myself and bring it home. I did expect Hazel with me. I leave Monday for Oslo. I am comfortable running in the USA. It will be more competitive in Europe. I am looking forward to the competition. I expect to compete in every race. I don't expect to win every race. I know that I have to be on my toes (in Europe). My goal is to set the American record. If I get close to it, I will be very happy. I have great training partners. We all work very hard. Coach (Frank) Gagliano is the best coach I have ever worked with. He loves us all."

Jearl Miles-Clark
"I felt really good today. Training has been going great and although we though we would have the same conditions as the Oracle meet (cold and rainy), it was beautiful today. We had a strong head wind on the back stretch and that slowed the times.

"I saw Michelle (Collins) on the home stretch and I wanted to catch her but I had to be patient. I knew my strength would keep me going and it did in the end."

Alvin Harrison - men's 400m
"I figured I'd get out. My goal is to become the ultimate sprinter; sub 44 in the 400, sub 20 in the 200, and sub 10 in the 100m."

Anthony Famiglietti - men's steeplechase
"The way the race was going, people were going pushing forward then holding back. I just decided to go my thing and go after it. That shook everyone up so I kept going hard. I was off my best time by about two seconds. I have run 8.21 several times last year but I can feel a big PR coming up in Europe this year."

Gail Devers - women's 100H
"They (U.S. Championships) don't get old. I feel at 35 (years old) I'm stronger than ever. I'm learning more. I'm proud of my age. I really am. In my life I've always wanted to be an inspiration to others. I've been blessed. I really have. I want to run faster than I ever have before. I want to learn my event even more so. Then I can control my event, rather than have the hurdles control me. The benefit to me this year is that I'm learning to be my own eyes. Success means that you have done your best. You're a winner by your effort."

Larry Wade - men's 110-meter hurdles
"I'm happy with the race. I wanted more. I wanted first place. I hit hurdles 7 and 8. I am coming off injuries. For this to be my second race of the year, I'm not complaining. I am an athlete with a competitive spirit. When you fall short of your goals, you look for room to get better. He (Allen Johnson) is running well. But as a whole, all the U.S. athletes are running well. Everyone is running 13.40 or better."

Allen Johnson - men's 110-meter hurdles
"The race was good. I got out of the blocks well and it was my best start this season. The sixth and seventh hurdles were a bit of a problem. I felt pretty good the second half of the race after I got over the bauble at hurdle six. I am running so fast and I can't handle the speed yet. I am in the best shape of my life right now. I am ready to run as the competition will push me. My goal is to run fast each time I race and go for the World Record. It is a definite possibility. I ran 13.04 in April and that's a predictor. I have never run this fast this early."

Regina Jacobs - women's 1500m
"I was really happy. Suzy is a good competitor, and I heard she's in good shape. When Suzy took the pace it really slowed down, and I was shocked. I thought if it came down to a strategic race, it would turn out like the race (U.S. Open) with Nicole (Teter) and me."

Marion Jones - women's 200m
"I felt really good. There was no drama before this race and I felt good coming off the curb. I try to stay just as focused as all the other athletes. I just focus on my lane. My confidence is back - not that it ever left. But after you lose a race (the 100m at the 2001 World Championships) when you are used to winning, it's hard. I feel very confident moving over to Europe. This is the time of year for everyone to start. I'm just going to concentrate on one race at a time. We want to start slowly preparing for whatever my body will face in Athens."

Ramon Clay - men's 200m
"It went very well for me. In the semifinals, I was a little shaky. I was not as aggressive as I wanted to be. For the finals, I had to be aggressive from the start to the end. I didn't have a time (to shoot for). To me, a win is a win regardless of the time."

On his future plans:
"I am going to have five or six days off before I leave for Europe. I leave for Europe on my birthday (June 29). My first race will be in Lausanne. I might run some 100s also."

Kelli White - women's 200m
"The race was very good. I was very happy with the time."

On the meet:
"I think the meet was great. The fans were great and the incorporation of the juniors and the seniors actually worked out really well."

On her performance:
"I have run about 15 races this year. I am the type of athletes who needs races. I need to run a lot to get me going and get prepared for the big meets. I came here ready to run the 100 and the 200. I am a bit disappointed with the 100 but I am happy with the 200."

On challenging Marion Jones:
"I was running to win the race. You don't come here to lose. When you are in college and you are running against professionals, you get intimidated. I lost my intimidation when I made the finals at the worlds (in the 100)."

On the 100 and 200:
"My 100 is trailing my 200. But I am not going to give up the 100. There aren't that many 200s in Europe. But today is a good way for me to go off to Europe. I am ready for Europe."

Seneca Lassiter - men's 1500m
"With 100 left I still had fuel in the tank. Then (Bryan) Berryhill pulled up along side me and I was going all out. I was thinking about getting to the finish line first."
