Athlete Quotes - Day 2

Lindsay Johnson - winner, women's javelin throw

"I went home like two weeks or three weeks before this meet, so I didn't have any coaching or anything, so I was a little nervous coming out here. It's always good competition coming out to meets like this."

Shiloh Whiting - winner, women's 3000m steeplechase

"I was just trying to stay focused, because I haven't run the steeplechase for awhile. I was trying to keep calm the first lap, and I was doing well, then I fell, and thought 'oh-no'. I've fallen in most of my races actually. When the Weber State girl passed me, I just tried to remember, it's not over yet."

Daniel Lyon - winner, men's 3000m steeplechase

"I felt pretty good today. I just started training for the steeple a few weeks ago. Before that, I was training for the 1500. It is quite a change in my training. I had to work my training and then work on the hurdles too. I felt good about the race. I wanted to run well and throw in a couple of surges to try and get a lead. It worked pretty well."

Note: Lyon has not met the qualifying standard for the World Junior Championships.

Andra Manson - winner, men's high jump

"I felt a little nervous today. My first jump at 7-4 was kind of embarrassing, but you have days like this."

Sanya Richards - winner, women's 400m

"They (the conditions) are way better today. I was so happy the sun was out and there was a little wind blowing. I knew it was going to be a tough race, because I knew of Monique's (Henderson) capabilities, but I've been working hard for it, and I knew I could do it if I just stayed focused and ran a good race."

Darrold Williamson - winner, men's 400m

"I felt pretty happy with my race. I finally listened to what my coach told me and got out hard and stayed relaxed. I tried to stay smooth and strong in the last 100. I felt pretty relaxed at the end of the race. I'm happy to qualify for worlds and I'm looking forward to it."

Tiffany Ross - winner, women's 100m hurdles

"I ran well. I knew I had a lot of competition today and that I would need to get out well. I'm just glad that I did get out and that I competed well. I think I can break 13 seconds, and that's my goal for juniors. I think if I can do that, then I can win at worlds. I always wanted to compete on the U.S. Junior Team, but never had the chance in high school because of my schedule."

Antwon Hicks - winner, men's 110m hurdles

"It was one of my goals this year to be junior national champion. It was my goal to make the USA Junior Team. Gold in Kingston (when asked about goals)."

Rafeeq Curry - winner, men's triple jump

"My winning jump...I was expecting a little more, but I guess I'm satisfied with that. On my first phase I was trying to get out there and hold my speed for my second and third phase. It worked out alright."

Kristina Shelton - winner, women's 800m

"It was great weather. I focused and I said (to myself), I made it this far, why not give it all I've got. So I did. I'm going to the University of South Carolina."

Richard Smith - winner, men's 800m

"I race well with (Will) Fitts. He has taken it out fast every time, and today was no different. I just sat behind and kicked."

Lauryn Williams - Junior Women's 100m
"That was the best start of my life. I'm on my way to some big things. I stutter-stepped at some point in the race and lost my rhythm. Otherwise, I think I would have done a little better.

Rashaad Allen - Junior Men's 100m
"I knew that I had a strong field. I was thinking that this was time to make up for not making the state meet my twelfth grade year. I'm just looking to break the school record. This is not the fastest track, but I just had to let that go mentally. I figured if others could break records, I could too."

Dan Glaz - winner men's 10,000-meters

"This was my third 10 k of the year, so I felt pretty comfortable and knew what to expect. My training has been going really great. I was just waiting to find when to make a surge and try to put the group away. My coach Robert Gary (Ohio State U.) has done a really good job getting me ready for this event. I had a disappointing cross country season and wanted to win a junior championship to kind of make up for that. I am really excited about going to world juniors and representing the U.S. It is such an incredible honor."

Lindsay Zinn - winner women's 5,000-meters

"It (the event) was exciting. I have never done anything like this (national championship meets) before. In high school I tried to stay away from the big events. My coach at Purdue talked me into trying this. It was his idea and I agreed and went for it. I didn't really have a strategy tonight. I just used a plan I used in high school. I let the other girls lead and then when I feel comfortable, I make a move. I am really excited about going to world juniors in Jamaica."

Rod Koborsi - junior men's 5000m
"Coach wanted me to stay with the pack. I really felt comfortable right at two miles, and I was ready to go. It was great to be here (at Stanford). It is a beautiful track and the atmosphere is great. I'm looking forward to world juniors, but I've haven't been feeling all that well since the 5,000 at Penn. I can hopefully get some good training in and then go to worlds."

Sara Bei - junior women's 5000m
"The race went really well. I just wanted to stay close to the front and make a move late. It has been a long season. I never had a season with cross country followed by indoor followed by outdoor. I really have not trained very well or felt really well since the NCAA meet. I just wanted to see how I felt tonight."
