2001 World Youth Championships July 12-15 Some of America's brightest young stars will travel to Debrecen, Hungary, for the second IAAF World Youth Athletics Track and Field Championships, July 12-15. The USA Team was selected last summer at the USATF Youth Athletics and Junior Olympic National Championships. Athletes also had to meet an IAAF qualifying standard. The inaugural IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships, for athletes 17-and-under, was held two years ago in Bydgoszcz, Poland. It proved to be a springboard to success for several of this country's rising stars, including Monique Henderson, who captured a pair of gold medals, including top honors in her specialty, the 400 meters, and Bryan Sears who won three medals (gold, silver and bronze) at the competition. Overall, the USA won four gold medals and seven total medals. This summer's venue, Debrecen, Hungary is a university town and is the second-largest city in Hungary (population of 225,000). It is located near the eastern border of Hungary, about three hours drive east of Budapest. Team USA will be composed of 50+ athletes. The Head Coach for the team is Ron Williams from Decatur, GA; Bob Flint of Scottsdale, AZ is the Head Manager. Stay tuned for more information and on-site updates this summer from Debrecen. |
