2001 Junior Olympics Cross Country

National Championships:
December 8, 2001
Pioneers Park - Lincoln, NE

USA Track & Field's Junior Olympic series doesn't end with the track and field championships each summer. We also offer a full cross country program in all five age divisions.

Here are the age divisions and distances:

  • Bantam (born 1991 and above) - 3 Kilometers
  • Midget (1989-1990) - 3 Kilometers
  • Youth (1987-1988) - 4 Kilometers
  • Intermediate (1985-1986) - 5 Kilometers
  • Young Men/Women (1983-1984) - 5 Kilometers

The progression is the same as for track and field. USATF's Junior Olympic cross country program is made up of preliminary meets in many of our 57 local Associations, which lead to their Association Championships, and then to 16 Regional Championships. Thousands participate and the group narrows to the "best of the best" at the National Championships each December.

More than 2,500 athletes will brave the elements December 8 at Pioneer's Park in Lincoln, NE - all in pursuit of Junior Olympic gold!

Packet Pickup, Opening Ceremonies and the meet's Awards Ceremonies will all take place at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, on the campus of the University of Nebraska.

The course at Pioneer's Park, where the Big 8 and Big 12 Conference Cross Country Championships have been conducted, features wooded areas, rolling hills, sharp turns and - of course - one large hill! The start and finish lines are within 100 meters of each other, so it's also a very spectator-friendly course.

Many years ago, cross country was an Olympic sport. It was contested as a "team" event at the 1904, 1912, 1920 and 1924 Summer Games, and as an individual event at the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Games. That spirit is still very prevalent in the sport of cross country today!

Check the Associations and Regionals calendar to find out how you can qualify for this year's National Championships in Lincoln, and perhaps become the next Junior Olympic champion!
