Born July 24, 1937, Roswell, N.M.
George Young was a good college runner at the University of Arizona but he didn't achieve international stardom until later when he became the first U.S. runner to be a member of four Olympic teams.
Young first made the Olympic team in 1960 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase but was eliminated in the trials. He again made the 1964 team in the steeplechase and took fifth at Tokyo but won the bronze medal in the same event at the 1968 Games in Mexico City, also placing 16th in the marathon. In 1972, he competed in his fourth Games but was eliminated in the 5,000-meter prelims. During his career, he won seven National AAU titles ranging from the steeplechase to the marathon. He later became a schoolteacher and coach in Arizona.
