EDDIE TOLAN SPRINTS (Inducted 1982)

Born September 29, 1908, Denver, Colo. Died January 30, 1967.

Only 5-7 and 145 pounds, Eddie Tolan didn't let his size prevent him from becoming the sprint star of the 1932 Olympic Games. He defeated fellow Hall of Famer Ralph Metcalfe in the 100 meters with a world record tying 10.3, then won the 200 easily in an Olympic record 21.2.

A University of Michigan graduate, he was the 1931 national collegiate 220 champion and won four National AAU sprint titles. Bespectacled, Tolan in 1929 was the first person to run 9.5 for the 100-yard dash. At one point, he held or shared the world records in both the 100 yards and the 100 meters.
