Born September 20, 1927, Harrisburg, Penn.
Although still relatively young in chronological terms, Ed Temple has compiled a coaching record that would be an envy of someone twice his age. After graduating from Tennessee State University, Temple became the Tigerbelles head track coach and his record may never be equalled.
Already a member of four other Halls of Fame, Temple has watched his women athletes win 23 Olympic medals, 13 of them gold. Olympic champions who have come under his tutelage include Wilma Rudolph, Mae Faggs, Wyomia Tyus, Edith McGuire and Madeline Manning Mims, all Hall of Famers. His Tigerbelle teams were perennial national champions, capturing a total of 34 team titles, 16 indoors, 13 outdoors and five in the junior meet. Twice he has been honored as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic women's team and twice more he has been the Pan American Games women's head coach. Civically active in Nashville in several areas, Temple is also the author of a book published in 1980, "Only the Pure in Heart Survive."
