Born February 3, 1918, Fulton, Mo. Died January 17, 1994.
A multi-talented athlete, Helen Stephens was an Olympic sprint champion who also competed very succesfully in the weight events, a unique combination even by today's standards.
While a student at Woods College in Missouri, Stephens was one of the top women competitors at the 1936 Olympics, winning two gold medals in the 100 and the 4 x 100 relay. Her versatility was displayed when she also placed ninth in the discus. She won a dozen National AAU titles, seven of them indoors and in 1936 was the AAU champion in the 100, shot put and discus. Never defeated in the sprints, she later worked in the U.S. civil service and competed in Masters meets in the early 1980s.
