JACKSON SCHOLZ SPRINTS (Inducted 1977)

Born March 15, 1897, Buchanan, Mich. Died October 26, 1986.

Made famous by the movie "Chariots of Fire" when he was beaten in the 1924 Olympic Games 100 meters by Great Britain's Harold Abrahams, Jackson Scholz was the first man to reach a sprint final in three different Olympics.

A star while at the University of Missouri, Scholz made his first Olympic appearance in 1920, winning a gold medal in the 4x 100 relay after taking fourth in the 100 meters. In 1924, before taking second to Abrahams in the 100, he won the 200. He also ran the 200 in the 1928 Games and once again was fourth. His only national title came in 1925 when he won the AAU 220. A competitor for the Newark A.C. in his postcollege days, Scholz later became a famous freelance writer.
