BRUCE JENNER DECATHLON (Inducted 1980)

Born October 28, 1949, Mt. Kisco, N.Y.

One of the last U.S. athletes to win an Olympic decathlon championship, Bruce Jenner accomplished that feat at Montreal in 1976, setting a world record in the process .

There was little in the early athletic career of Jenner that would indicate such athletic prowess. Jenner went to small Graceland College in Iowa on a football scholarship and after taking up the decathlon he qualified for the Olympic team in 1972. He was 10th at Munich but kept improving and won the National AAU title in 1974 before setting a world record and winning the Pan-American Games title in 1975. He won his second AAU title in 1976 and capped his career with the Montreal victory. He parlayed his triumph into a career in the television and movie industry that is still flourishing. Elected to U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1986.
