Born September 10, 1946, Dumas, Ark.
Following Bob Hayes as the "World's Fastest Human" was Jim Hines, a speedster from Texas Southern University whose world 100-meter record of 9.95 at the 1968 Olympic Games lasted 15 years.
The first man to break 10 seconds for 100 meters, Hines was the AAU 220 champion in 1966 and tied the world 100-yard dash record of 9.1 in 1967, winning the AAU 100 title the same year. He was second in the AAU 100 in 1968 but won the Olympic trials and was a star at the Mexico City Olympics. After taking the 100, he also helped the U.S. win the 4 x 100 relay, again in world-record time times. Hines, who was from Oakland, Calif., later unsuccessfully tried pro football with the Miami Dolphins.
