One of the world's top women sprinters in the late 1960s, Barbara Ferrell during a five-year period appeared in the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, the 1967 Pan American Games and the 1967 and 1970 World University Games. In 1967 and 1968, she had a hand in six world records, two at 100 meters, two at 200 meters and two in the 4 x 100-meters relay. At the 1968 Olympics, Ferrell won a gold medal in the 4 x 100 relay, was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200. She won the Olympic Trials 100 in 1972 but later was injured and finished seventh in both the 100 and 200 at the Games. She won the National AAU 100 and 200 double in 1969 and also was the 100 winner in 1967. She was the top ranked U.S. women's sprinter at 100 meters in 1967 and 1969 and in the 200 from 1967 to 1969. Ferrell, who attended California State University at Los Angeles and the University of Southern California, represented the Los Angeles Mercurettes during her competitive days. She later became the head women's track and field coach at USC. She married Warren Edmonson, an outstanding sprinter at UCLA.
