HERIWENTHA (MAE) FAGGS (Starr) SPRINTS (Inducted 1976)

Born April 10, 1932, Mays Landing, N.J.  Died January 27, 2000.

A three-time Olympian, Heriwentha (Mae) Faggs was a gold medalist at the 1952 Olympics when she ran on the 4 x 100-meters relay team that set a world record of 45.9.

An outstanding athlete at Tennessee State University, she made her first Olympic appearance in 1948 but failed to qualify in the 200. Besides her relay gold medal at Helsinki in 1952, she also was sixth in the 100 but failed to make the 200 final. At the 1956 Olympics, she won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 relay. She was also a gold medalist at the 1955 Pan-American Games in the sprint relay and took a silver medal in the 200. She won 11 National AAU titles, six of them in the indoor 200. She later became a schoolteacher.
