Born October 14, 1873, Lafayette, Ind. Died September 29, 1937.
No one in Olympic history won more gold medals than Ray Ewry, a former Purdue University athlete who accumulated his record total of 10 in four Olympiads. He won three golds apiece in 1900 and 1904 and two each in 1906 and 1908. All of them came in events no longer contested such as the standing long jump, standing high jump and standing triple jump. However, that should not detract from the impressiveness of his feat, which is an all-time Olympic record.
A 15-time national champion in the standing events from 1898 to 1910, he might have more had the standing jumps not been dropped from the AAU program for a six-year period. Ewry overcame polio as a child and attended Purdue, where he competed in track and football. A hydraulics engineer by profession, he competed until he was almost 40 and made a bid for the 1912 Olympic team but fell short. He was elected to U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983.
