With his fifth-place finish in the 400 meters at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials – Track & Field, Calvin Smith, Jr., a 20-year old University of Florida sophomore, qualified for a spot on the Team USA 4x400m relay pool for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Smith was not chosen to compete in Beijing. Smith lowered his 400m personal best to 45.07 seconds with his third-place finish in Barcelona on July 19, 2008. Halfway through his college track and field career, Smith, the 2007 SEC Freshman Runner of the Year, has earned three All-America distinctions and is the 2007 SEC Outdoor champion at 400 meters. A prep star at Cardinal Gibbons HS in Raleigh, N.C., Smith’s best high school sprint times were 10.62 in 100m, 21.17 in 200m and 46.17 in 400m … 2006 USA Today All-USA High School team selection … 2006 Tampa Tribune Boys Track & Field Runner of the Year … Ranked #2 in the nation among high school athletes in 200m and 400m by Track & Field News in 2006 … Set 100m, 200m and 400m records at AAU National Club Championships … At 2006 Florida Class 3A state meet, won 200m title in 21.20 and was third in 400m (47.25) and 4x400m (3:17.85) … Improved dramatically from junior year in which he took fourth in 400m (48.71) and ninth in 200m (23.53)…son of former world record-holder, world champion, Olympic medalist and National Track & Field Hall of Famer, Calvin Smith, Sr.
