Bloom has struggled with injuries since his outstanding 2000 season, but he looks for a bounce-back and good health in 2003In 2000, Bloom made his first Olympic team in the shot put after finishing a heartbreaking fourth in the discus at the 1996 Olympic Trials. He says he got into throwing the same way that everybody else did. I was trying to stay in shape for football, and I went out for track because that was the only way to get into the weight room in the spring. Threw a modest 44-9 as a prep junior, and in his senior indoor season improved all the way to 62-4.5, Thats when I started thinking that I could get a college scholarship for throwing. After giving up football at Wake Forest, Bloom won the NCAA SP/DT double in 1996, becoming the eighth man ever to do so. For now, Ive dedicated myself to throwing. Bloom has a hard time saying which event he likes better, the shot or the discus, and he and John Godina are the only two men currently contesting both at a world-class level. has a masters degree in mathematics education from Wake Forest got married after the Olympics before moving to Vacaville, where his wife, Terri, works as a softball coach at nearby Solano Community College in Suisun. Bloom is an assistant coach at UC-Davis. He and his wife Terri have a one-year-old daughter, Samantha Pearson and are expecting another baby in September.
