Brantly started his career in an unusual way. At age 11, he fell off a motorboat, and sliced his heel badlytwo years later, he was running in his yard when the radiologist who had helped him after the accident asked him if he wanted to take up runningran 9:09.74 for two miles in high schoolan asthma suffererearned his degree in athletic administration in the off-season, trains sometimes with former American record-holder Jerry Lawsonhas said, "Making the U.S. Olympic team in 2000, that's the sole purpose of my running life."says he plans to retire after 2000 Olympics.

1997: Injured most of year after tearing a hamstring in Crescent City 10k.
