One of the nation’s most
talented young throwers, Garrett Johnson enjoyed a tremendous season in 2006 in
winning the NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor men’s shot put titles, and ending
the season ranked #5 in the U.S. by Track & Field News. In addition to
his athletic prowess, Johnson is known for his tremendous acumen in the class
room while a student at
Florida
State
University.
On November 19, 2005,
Johnson became one of 32 college students from throughout the
United States that year chosen
to be a Rhodes Scholar and granted the opportunity to study at the University of
Oxford in England. He was one of less than 100 from around the world who joined
the prestigious academic program in October of 2006. With this honor, Johnson
became just the second FSU student ever to have been selected as a Rhodes
Scholar. His brother Marqus was a four-year standout and league champion at FSU
in the throws area... graduated from FSU in three years with a degree in
political science... was named a fist-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar...
President of Student Athlete Advisory Council... Vice president of Student
Seminole Boosters... Second team ESPN Academic All-American. As a prep standout
at Tampa Baptist Academy, Johnson earned high school
All-America honors... was the #3 shot putter in the nation with a throw of
19.81m/65-0 feet... turned in a discus throw of 58.53m/192-0... placed third at
the national high school Adidas Championships... earned all-state honors all
four years...was the class salutatorian, graduating second in his class.
