Messner enjoyed the fruits of her first injury-free season in 2005, placing third at USA Outdoors and 15th at the World Outdoors... she set her personal best in the qualifying round at the World Outdoors (9:39.68)... the 2004 Olympic Trials was only Messner’s fourth time competing in the steeple event, finishing in third place ... Messner is the second-fastest miler in the University of Colorado’s history behind Mary Decker. She always thought about competing in the steeple once she finished college, but never really competed until 2004, after speaking with her coach. She took off the year from competing in track and field in 2001 to pursue other opportunities because she was unsure if she wanted to still compete.
