Schwald missed out on the medals in the 1,500m by one place at the 2005 USA
Outdoors, clocking 4:07.86 to take fourth... she was eighth in the 1,500m at the
2004 Olympic Trials following her third-place finish in the 3,000m at the 2004
USA Indoors and also her runner-up finish in the 1,500m at the 2003 Outdoor
Championshipsa former U.S. junior 1,500m and NCAA indoor 3,000m champion while
at the University of Arkansas, Schwald re-emerged as a national-level runner in
2001 after taking 1997 and 1999 offthe Washington state native and 1995 NCAA
Indoor 3000m champion, Schwald trained for a time in Boston after graduating
from Arkansasin 2000 she relocated to Madison to be coached by Peter Tegen and
train with Suzy Favor Hamilton, Amy Wickus, Kathy Butler and other world-class
athletes coached by TegenMissed advancing to the final at 2001 World Outdoor
Championships by one place after a competitor fell in front of her throwing her
off stride. I really thought with about 300 meters to go that I was sitting
fine, she said. Then that girl fell, and its really difficult to regain
momentum when you come to a stop. Ive had a great year, and I really think Ive
shown that I belong in some of these races.
