Career Highlights: 3rd at 2005 USA Outdoors; 2001 U.S. decathlon runner-up; 1997 NCAA runner-up

McMullen qualified for his second World Outdoor Championships in 2005 with his third-place finish at the USA Outdoor Championships in Carson, Calif. Although disappointed in finishing fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, McMullen posted a new personal best score with his total of 8,285 points with his performance in Sacramento. With outstanding performances in the 1,500m, McMullen has become a top decathlete in the United States. Not coincidentally, his older brother is two-time U.S. 1,500m champion Paul McMullenPhil was coached by Jack Shaw at Western Michigan, winning three Central Collegiate decathlon crowns and three Mid-American Conference titles during his collegiate career. A three-time NCAA qualifier, his best collegiate performance in that event was in 1997 when he placed second with 7731 points. An ankle injury just prior to the 1998 NCAAs kept him from placing higher (5th-7613). McMullen scored a then personal best of 8,097 points in winning the 2000 Sea Ray Relays, a point total he surpassed with 8,220 at the 2001 U.S. Championships.
