Known for his prowess in cross country, Downin was his second career USATF Club Cross Country individual crown in 2006 in San Francisco after first winning the title in 2000. A versatile distance runner throughout his career, Downin has enjoyed recent success competing in marathons. He set a personal best of 2:14:28 with his 11th place finish at the 2005 ING New York City Marathon and ended the season ranked #5 in the U.S. at the 26.2-mile distance by Track & Field News. Also in 2005, he had his best-ever finish in the 10,000 meters at a USA Outdoor Championships, where he placed third with a new personal best time of 28:34.65. A four-time All American at the University of Wisconsin, where he was an Economics major, Downin was introduced to distance running by his older brother Andy, a standout miler at Georgetown and the 2001 USA champ at 1,500m. At Wisconsin, Downin captured a pair of Big 10 cross country crowns and finished fourth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in both 1998 and 1999. Since graduating in 2000, Downin has represented the United States at two World Cross Country Championships (2001, 2002) and posted a pair of top-seven national championship finishes in the 10,000 on the track (seventh in 2000, sixth in 2001). He runs on average between 125-130 miles a week. Matt twice qualified for the Foot Locker High School Cross Country Championships and capped his senior season by winning the national title in a tight race with his instate rival and friend, John Mortimer.
