Chaput continued to prove that he is one of the nation’s best javelin throwers in 2006 with his third-place finish at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships, and by throwing a personal best of 80.45m/263-11 with his win at Princeton on April 22. Chaput had an outstanding season in 2005, which was highlighted by a new personal best throw of 80.45 meters/263 feet, 11 inches in winning at Princeton on April 23. Chaput ended the 2005 campaign with three of the top five throws by an American that year…After finishing second in the men’s javelin at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, Chaput still needed to hit the Olympic ‘A” qualifying standard in order to compete at the Olympics in Athens. At a meet in New Haven, Ct., Chaput was attempting to better the standard of 81.80m/268-4 when he pulled his hamstring during his fourth throw…two years ago he had “Tommy John” reconstructive surgery on his elbow. “On average, it takes nine-to-12 months to come back from that injury,” he said. “For me, it took a solid 12-to-15 months. It was extremely frustrating. I had a graft, part of the plantarus longus near the Achilles tendon, taken from my ankle and needed to wear a support boot for a month. Chaput was the recipient of the 2004 Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for NCAA Division I by the United States Track Coaches Association…graduated with a degree in Communications and a 3.60 GPA.
