An eighth-place finish at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships and a win at San Diego were Beyer’s highlights in 2006. He enjoyed his finest season in 2005 that featured a new personal best of 21.13 meters/69 feet, 4 inches, and the first world ranking of his career by Track & Field News (10th). After placing 8th at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships, Beyer continued to climb the men’s shot put ladder by placing 5th at the 2004 Olympic Trials. A two-time Iowa prep shot put champion, Beyer as a senior won the shot put, took second in the discus and fifth in the high jump in his class at the state championships…had a prep discus best of 54.72m/179-6…the 1994 Drake Relays prep discus champ and 1995 Drake shot put champion, Beyer also earned all-state honors in basketball and academic all-state honors in football and basketball…in his first international competition, Beyer placed second at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to fellow American Brad Mears. His coach Dan O’Mara believes Beyer can be one of the nation’s best. “He’s just scratching the surface of his abilities,” he said. “He’s a great athlete with great explosiveness. If he wants it, he could be in the top three in the U.S. some day. And, if you’re in the top three in this country, you’re pretty close to the top four or five in the world.” Beyer has trained with Andy Bloom at the USOC Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Beyer was a construction engineering major at Iowa State.
