Thomas in 2003 established himself as a contender to be reckoned with in the 400m hurdles in winning the silver medal at the Pan Am GamesAfter graduation from high school in 1992, Thomas attended Blinn Junior College where he finished second at the JUCO Nationals as a freshman. He bounced back to win the national JUCO title as a sophomore before transferring to Abilene Christian in 1995. Thomas placed 2nd at the NCAA Division II Championships as a junior before giving up his senior year of eligibility in 1996 to train for the Olympic Trials. He finished a frustrating fourth at the 1996 Olympic Trials in Atlanta. It was disappointing, he said, but it was definitely a stepping stone. I had a lot of maturing to do. He came back to make the Olympic Team by finishing second at the 2000 Olympic Trialsplayed football in high school where he was a first team all-state wide receiver. He also played football at Blinn JChas an 8-year-old son, Zavante.
