One of Americas finest middle distance runners for nearly a decade, Stember had another strong year in 2004, headlined by his win in the 800 meters at the USA Indoor Championships. With his runner-up time of 1:46.92 at the 2002 USA Indoor Championships, Stember became the 13th American ever to break 1:47 indoors. Stember secured a spot on the 2000 U.S. Olympic team by surpassing the Olympic A standard of 3:36.80 in Monaco at the Herculis Zepter meet on August 18, with his time of 3:35.11. A Fair Oaks, California, native, Stember ran a 4:04 mile in high school and competed in the elite mile in the Prefontaine Classic while a prep. Stember was an NCAA All-American numerous times and has seen substantial international competition as a member of several United States teams.
