Known throughout his career as a consistent performer, Setliff stepped up to win the 2000-2002 U.S. discus titles. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he bettered his 12th place finish at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta by placing fifth; hell try for the medal stand in 2004. Although he did not compete in 1999 due to an injury, Setliff bounced back strong in 2000, setting a PR of 224-9 on March 25 in La Jolla, Calif., and winning the Olympic Trials with a throw of 209-9 for his first-ever national championship. Set PR in 2001 on July 21 with a throw of 69.44m/227-10 in La Jolla, the best mark by an American for the year. After 5th place finish at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Setliff said, I believe strongly that the U.S. is a great discus-throwing country. I take pride that a U.S. thrower is in the top 5. But Id like to break through and medal one of these days. On my first two throws (in the final) I had a lot of energy into the discus, but I missed them.
