Moore had his greatest accomplishment as a decathlete in 2003 with his gold medal-winning performance at the Pan American Games, and his improvement continued in 2004 with a new personal best performance of 8,085 points. Moore began to establish himself as a sophomore at Abilene Christian University by winning the 1996 NCAA Division II decathlon title. He was injured most of 1997 (redshirt) and 1998, but in his senior campaign Moore blossomed. An asthmatic, he had the 1999 Div II meet well in hand when an asthma attack hampered his performance. At the USA Outdoor Championships he finished fifth earning several international spots. At the 1999 World University Games in Palma de Marca, Moore came up with a huge 1500 personal best and the silver medalalso in 1999, he was the leading American in a narrow team win in a dual competition with Germany. In 2000 he was in third place at the U.S. Olympic Trials (where he tied the meet record in the high jump at 2.17m/7-1.50) before a no-height in the pole vaultIn 2001 Moore won the USA Indoor heptathlon crown (6078) then placed fourth at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.
