Hanscom, the sixth-place finisher at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:31:53, is a graduate of James Madison University and won the 2003 Marine Corps Marathon in 2:37:59, her debut at the distance. She recently left a career working in bio-medical research, where she worked for three years, in order to devote her full attention to her running career. She works part-time at Pacers Running Store. On October 5, 2004, she celebrated 12 years of being cancer-free, having had surgery her freshman year of high school to remove a cancerous brain tumor. Later that year she led her high school to a second state championship. Her college career, includes James Madison University's fifth all-time best performance in the indoor 5,000 (16:52:23 in 2001) and ECAC qualifying times in the indoor mile, 3,000, and 5,000 and outdoor 10,000.
