The first ever NCAA All-American from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Briney's breakthrough came in 2004 when he emerged on the USA road running scene with a fourth-place finish at the 2004 Olympic marathon trials in Birmingham, Ala., which ultimately earned him a spot on the U.S. marathon team for the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
