A protge of University of Tennessee coach J.J. Clark, Bennett is a young talent that looks to impact the U.S. 800m scene for years to come. With training partners that include five-time Olympian Jearl Clark and two-time Olympian Hazel Clark, Bennett is in good company in Knoxvilleat the 2005 World Outdoor Championships in Helsinki, Bennett got off to a good start but fell halfway through the first lap in the womens 800m semifinals. She claimed that she was clipped from behind causing her to fall. After the race Team USA filed a protest on her behalf claiming obstruction, but the protest was deniedAt Tennessee, she earned All-America honors in the 800 and was instrumental in returning the Lady Vols 4x400m relay back into the national spotlight. Bennett was also an accomplished high school athlete in her home state of Ohio, and was ranked second in the national among prepsters as a junior by Track & Field News in 1998.
