She specialized in hurdles, running 49.9 for the 300 intermediates...in her senior year she applied to Vermont, and wanting to compete in a sport, she contacted the track coach...swimming was out: I didnt want to climb into a cold pool in the middle of winter. She started throwing the hammer her freshman year...she graduated from Vermont before the NCAA ever offered the hammer throw for women...earned her masters in English (teaching) at Boston University...I felt I was barely scratching the surface as a thrower, so I trained at Boston College with the McGehearty twins and John Walker. In 1997, I threw my PR at 11:30 at night at the USA Nationals, so I figured there must have been more there. ...when she got a job teaching English in the alternative learning program at Darien High School in Connecticut, she got in touch with Southern Connecticut throws coach Bill Sutherland: Hes an unbelievable coach. Everything is falling into place now...of working full-time and training, she says, Its something that has to get done. When youre passionate about something, you just do it.
