Fitchen will look to make the U.S. Olympic Team in 2004 after placing sixth in the 10,000 meters at the 2003 USA Championships. She started running in 1992 after the death of her father. It became my whole emotional outlet. I went out and ran every day. Before it was my hobby; now its my career. Fitchen considers herself a fierce competitor and has improved dramatically, now ranking among Americas best. A former high school cheerleader and a pre-med major in college, Fitchen didnt become serious about running until 1995, when she joined the Nike Farm Team. Her breakthough season came in 2000, when she finished 5th at the USATF Cross Country Trials and was 33rd at the World Cross Country Championships, helping Team USA to a bronze medal. At the Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Fitchen finished a disappointing 9th place (32:16.95) and was then forced to sit out a month with a nagging foot injury immediately after the Trials. In 2001, she rebounded with the second fastest 10,000m time in the U.S. (32:14.64) at the Mt. SAC Relays.
