Career Highlights: Fourth in decathlon at 2001 & 2002 USA Outdoor Championships.

Smith transferred to University of Tennessee in 1994 from Ferris State University, and trained with Lawrence Johnson, where he was 3rd at the 1993 NCAA II Championships. When Ferris state scraped the track program, Smith transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he was coached by Bill Webbas a Volunteer Smith was a two-time SEC champion and the 1995 NCAA Outdoor Championships runner-up. He was a three-time NCAA qualifier, yet a hamstring pull at the 1996 Championships in Eugene ruined his chance for the collegiate crown. He later moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. to train under Noel Reubel and 2000 Olympic medalist Chris Huffins. Now trains at USOC ARCO Training Center in Chula Vista. In 2001 Chad was second at the Mt. Sac Relays and fourth at USA nationals with then PR of 8075 points. He opened the 2002 season with a win by setting his current PR of 8133 at the Challenge of Atlas meeting in Atlanta.
