In winning the 400m at the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, Pierce ended a long and successful season. He was named USATF's Athlete of the Week on February 27 after setting a new collegiate record in the 400 meters the previous weekend at the Big 10 Indoor Championships in University Park, Pennsylvania. His time of 45.46 bettered the collegiate standard of 45.60 by Brandon Couts set in 2000. Also at the 2001 Big 10 Indoors, Pierce set a new conference championships record in winning the 200 meters in 20.84, and ran the anchor leg on the Buckeyes' winning 4x400m relay team that set a new meet record of 3:09.71. graduated from Ohio State in December 2001 with a bachelor's degree in Aviationemployed as a flight instructor at Ohio State University airportas a prep, Pierce set the Ohio state record in the 400m with a time of 47.36won state HS 400m titles in 1996 & '97has one son, Andrew Benjamin Pierce II, born October 10, 2000suffered a pulled hamstring in January 2002 that hampered him during the collegiate season outdoors.
