After two years as national runner-up at 100m, Lewis placed 4th at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 10.09 but made the 4x100 relay squad. Lewis comes from a baseball family, with father and uncle having played AAA ball. Lewis played baseball through his 9th grade year, when he was MVP of his school's junior varsity team. The next year, he was cut to make way for the coach's son, so he went out for track: 'that was my way of staying out of trouble.' He didn't really get passionate about the sport until his mother forced him to attend the California state HS meet (he hadn't qualified that year). After being wowed by stars Marion Jones and Ricky Carrigan, he said, 'Oh my goodness, this is what I want to do.' After a year at Blinn JC, he transferred to Norfolk State to work with former 100m world record holder Steve Riddick...says his most disappointing moment being part of the 4x100 squad that failed to finish its heat at the 1997 Worlds has become one of his strong points: 'It's made me work a lot harder. I'm going to be running a lot of relays. I've been working on my weak points. I want to be the most consistent at 100m. I want to win golds in the 100, 200 and relay.'
