In his first-ever international competition, Grimes ran the second leg in the first round of the 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Edmonton. Although an inexperienced relay runner on the international scene, Grimes showed a cool head in waiting on first leg runner Jon Drummond, who injured his quadriceps midway through his portion of the race, to get to him for the baton exchange. Grimes took Drummond's place as the lead leg in the semifinal and final as Team USA won the gold medal in 37.96. Grimes said afterwards: "I had a coach who had faith in me and three other guys who had faith in me, including Jon Drummond. After the second round, he came to me and told me to relax because he saw I was tense in the second round. I can't wait until next year. It's time for me to put on a show next year." Grimes played wide receiver in football and ran track at Riverside Community College before transferring to Abilene Christian, where he lettered in football as a defensive back. In 1997, Grimes played in all 11 games for Abilene Christian as a reserve defensive back with one interception, one fumble recovery and 14 tackles. Grimes was the 1995 California high school state 300m hurdles champion.
