During his collegiate career, Gray became one of the most dominant runners in the history of the Ivy League. Post-collegiately he has turned in fast times, running the fastest time by an American outdoors in 2000 and 2001 and indoors in 2001 and 2002, and in 2001 he won his first U.S. title at the Indoor Championships. A seven-time All-American, Gray captured Heptagonal Championships every time he ran, setting Brown records in the 400m (46.19) and 800m (1:46.07). During his freshman year, Gray was named Brown's outstanding first-year male athlete while winning the Heptagonal title in the indoor 800m and outdoor 400m, while also setting records in both races. At the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships, Gray broke the former American Collegiate indoor record with a time of 1:46.05, finishing second to Derrick Peterson of Missouri. The mark was ninth-fastest in the world that year, and second-fastest in the United States.
