Career Highlights: 2001 USA Outdoor 1,500m champion
Downin was a surprise winner of the 1,500 meters at the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships, winning a tactical race in 3:37.63, just three-hundreths of a second ahead of runner-up Seneca Lassiter. Downin's win came in front of a live national television audience on ESPN's SportsCenter, drawn to follow prep star Alan Webb, who placed fifth in the race. Downin's success at the 2001 Nationals in Eugene followed a high school career as a Massachusetts all-state striker on his state championship soccer team from Duxbury. As a prep trackster, Downin won state titles in the mile and two miles as a sophomore, junior and senior. He went on to Georgetown University, where he had a big senior season, placing fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and a surprising sixth at the 2000 Olympic Trials. Downin disappeared from the track scene following the 1997 season following a series of injuries, and later he moved to Madison, Wis., on the advice of his younger brother Matt, an emerging star at the University of Wisconsin. Downin began working at the local Movin' Shoes running store, and also began to train again in November 1999 under the tutelage of Wisconsin coach Jerry Schumacher. Downin spoke with Track & Field News about Schumacher following his shocking win in Eugene, "I can't say enough about what he has done for me," he said. "He's become one of my best friends. It's just me and him out on the track most days. My brother comes out to watch sometimes. We just have a great rapport. He's believed in me for two years, even at times when I didn't believe."
