Mark McGehearty and his twin brother, Sean, have been nationally known in the hammer throw since 1991. A two-time U.S. Junior champ, Mark placed 10th at the U.S. Outdoor Nationals as a sophomore at Boston College in 1995. The Big East champ in 1996, he placed 8th at the NCAA Outdoors, and a very respectable 10th at the U.S. Olympic Trials that summer. Dean's List students while at Boston College, Mark majored in history with a minor in education while Sean majored in sociology with a minor in education. Mark is the older of the twins by two minutes. Mark is right-handed and Sean is a lefty. They spin in opposite directions while throwing either the 35-pound weight or the hammer. The twins were named co-Eagle of the Year by their alma mater in 1997. Mark, a seven-time NCAA All-American, improved his PR by nearly seven feet in 2000 with a heave of 242-10 at New Haven on July 1.
