Originally a high jumper/long jumper, McCray joined his high school track
team because "I didn't really have anything else to do." When the
team's sprinter got hurt, the coach
asked McCray to fill in for him...he says, "My mouth got me into the quarter. The coach stepped on the bus and asked for a volunteer to run the 400. No one wanted to run. I said, 'I am NOT going to run the 400!' The coach said, 'Oh, you're not? Well, just for that, you're going to run it.' I won it in 49.9"...of college, he says, "I was always doing so many things, I never got a chance to concentrate on the 400"...earned degree in sociology, with minor in marketing..."I'm trying to do everything I can do to become the world's greatest 400m runner. The best decision I've made is to come here and train with John Smith." ...says that Smith tried to recruit him for UCLA when he was in high school: "Four years later, at the Olympic Trials, after cramping up in the second round, I sat down with John and decided this is what I wanted to do.
