A 1996 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Ingalls is a full-time Army Captain stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In addition to serving as a platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division in 1997 and 1998, Ingalls was under intensive Army training that prevented him from competing during that time. He resumed competition in 1999, and went on to place 4th at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials after moving into third place on his final throw. Earlier in 2000, Ingalls suffered a severely sprained ankle and a tear in his lower abdominals. "I had surgery in December of 2000 to repair my abdominals, and I'm still taking it easy so they can heal properly," he said. "I'm looking forward to moving to San Jose, California in August and that's when I'll have the time to resume heavy training for the hammer throw." Although he expects to compete seldom in 2000, Ingalls is looking forward to a bright future. "My goal is to reach the 76 to 77-meter mark in 2001, and be up to 78 meters by 2003. I expect to hit 80 meters and challenge the American record (Lance Deal, 82.52m/270-9) in 2004. I also expect to be on the next Olympic Team." Ingalls credits Deal for much of his success. "Lance has been a real mentor for me," he said. "I want to follow his example as a great athlete and ambassador of our sport. He's always told me I have a lot of potential as a hammer thrower, and that in time I could become one of the best." Married to Kimberly on September 11, 1999.
