Despite a seventh place finish at the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships in June, Furman has the qualifying mark to compete on the World Championships team in Edmonton. Furman established the qualifying mark (2.30/7-6.5i) in 2000, within the one-year window allowed for qualifying. He was the 1997 U.S. Junior high jump champion and was also named the 1996 Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year as a prep senior. A standout high jumper from the University of Florida and a four-time All-American, Furman started jumping in the seventh grade, when he cleared the bar at 4 feet, 7 inches won the South Carolina state high jump title in 1996 was also a starting point guard and All-State in basketball majored in sociology at Florida.. Full name is Darnell David Furman, Jr.

2000: 2nd, NCAA Outdoors (2.25m/7-04.50) cleared 2.30/7-6.5 indoors at Gainesville to pick up IAAF "A" qualifier 4th at NCAA Indoors (2.26/7-5) no-heighted at Olympic Trials best of 2.30/7-6.5i.
1999: Won SEC Outdoor HJ 9th at NCAA Indoors to earn All-America honors (2.20/7-2.5)17th, NCAA Outdoors no-heighted at USA Outdoors best of 2.25m/7-4.5.
1998: 10th at NCAA Indoors for All-America honors (2.17/7-1.5) broke 18-year-old Florida school record for indoor HJ (2.28/7-5.75) no-heighted at NCAA Outdoors and USA Outdoors best of 2.28m/7-5.75.
