Famous for her shyness, Torrence was finally persuaded to run track as a prep sophomore; she would only practice after the other girls had gone home; trained in street shoes, thinking that spikes were too "flashy"qualified for the Olympic Trials as a Georgia frosh in 1984, but admits she was too frightened to compete thereher older brother Charles was paralyzed from the waist down while playing street football; she has said he is her inspirationnoted in the past for her temper; was in the pool to run on the gold medal 4x100m in the Seoul Olympics, but flew home in anger before the race after relay coach Fred Thompson told her she couldn't run because she had trouble "getting off the mark"started a storm of controversy in the 1992 Olympics by saying that some of the women racing in the 100m final had taken drugshas had a difficult relationship with the media: "I can adjust to anything the media says to sell papers. Sometimes they've taken one thing that I don't believe in and ran with it. I feel like the media doesn't want to move on.
