Steely ran 4:30.2 for 1500m as a senior in high schoolshe started out as a sprinter in 5th grade, hitting times of about 11.1y and 24.5y in 8th grade: "I slowed down, though, and in high school they were always trying to get me to move up to the 400m or 800m but I thought that was way too far. Then my coach made a bet with me: if I didn't place in the Catholic League in my junior year I would have to race the mile as a senior.
