Toomey, racing for the first time since last summer at the 2005 USA Indoor Championships, showed very little evidence of rust, using her 800-meter speed to distance herself from the field in a winning time of 4:13.25...Toomeys 2004 indoor season made her an international threatwhen her previous coach, Bob Sevene, moved to California in the fall of 2003, Toomey took on Tom McDermott as her mentorthe results of more mileage (75 miles/week) and more intense training paid off as she became the only athlete ever to win the middle-distance double at the USA Indoor championships. Toomey won the 800 and 1500m at 2004 USA Indoors, then placed 4th at World Indoors in a personal best time of 1:59.64with an American record for 1,000m under her belt as well (2:34.19)after suffering an injury during the early outdoor season, Toomey failed to make the 800m final at the Olympic Trials. She came back to place 2nd in the 1,500m, but an adductor injury suffered in Europe kept her from achieving the Olympic A standarda state champion diver in high school, Toomey ran track briefly as a high school freshman and made the 400m finals in the state championships, but disliked running the 400m and the nervousness she felt before racesshe stopped running and decided to focus on divingten years later she bet a co-worker shed run the Boston Marathon. She enjoyed running so much that she joined the local running clubby chance, Toomey ran the 800m (in 2:14 her first time) and loved it. She called around looking for coaches and only Bob Sevene returned her call. In her first year of serious competitive running (1998), Toomey ran 2:04 and qualified for U.S. Nationals in New Orleans, where she made the semi finalsby 2000, she dropped her time to 2:03 and ran at the U.S. Olympic Trials, where she finished 5th in the semi finals. Toomeys breakthrough year was 2001, when she finished 3rd at USA Indoors (2:03.62) and qualified for her first World Indoor Championships team. Toomey met her husband Michael when she joined a running clubthey married September 12, 1998 in Salem, Massachusetts, where they currently reside in a 100-year-old house with their hound dog, Zoe, and three catsher maiden name is Lincolngraduated from Tufts University with a degree in Biology and worked for an Internet company until 2000she and Michael had an agreement if she broke 2:02, she could take time off from work to focus on training.
