Petrucci enjoyed a strong season in 2006 highlighted by his sixth-place finish at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships and the farthest throw of his career since 2003 when he was the runner-up at Newport Beach with a toss of 64.51 meters/211 feet 7 inches. Petrucci made his first Team USA experience a memorable one, being part of the torch relay at the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, China. He was chosen in a random drawing among U.S. athletes in all sports at the WUGs. A representative of each country at the WUGs participated in the relay in downtown Beijing near Tiananmen Square, with Petrucci receiving the torch from a Ukrainian high jumper and handing off to a team official from Uruguay. “Its a tremendous honor and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Petrucci, who was accompanied on his trip to downtown Beijing for the torch relay by hammer thrower Jay Harvard and fellow discus thrower Jarred Rome. “I’ve never done anything like this. It’s my first U.S. team – I’m brand new.” Set the Northern Arizona University school record with a throw of 63.36m/207-10a two-time All-American in track and field, Petrucci was an All-Big Sky Conference football selection in 1997 as a defensive end. His 2002 personal best of 65.92m/216-3 was the second best performance that season by an American.
