After years as a top relay runner for Team USA and a top-3 sprinter, Gaines enjoyed one of her finest seasons in 2001, winning her first-ever U.S. titles indoors at 60m and outdoors at 100m. She continued that momentum in 2002 by successfully defending her U.S. Indoor title, and finishing as the runner-up at the USA Outdoor Championshipscoached by Brooks Johnson while at Stanford...she started running at age 12, winning at the Jesse Owens meet at the LA Coliseum the year before the 1984 Olympic Games...a high school superstar, she competed in the Olympic Trials at age 17...earned a degree in psychology, completing the pre-med requirements, while at Stanford...her sister Charletta is a high school track coach in Texas...prior to the Sydney Olympics, Gaines worked with her then sponsor to run a nationwide contest for 13-14 year old studentsthe students were asked to write an essay on what they thought it took to be an Olympian. The top four essay authors, two boys and two girls, won a trip to the Games...moved from Hercules, Calif., to the Atlanta area in 2001.
