HEDY MARQUE INDUCTED INTO THE
2012 MASTERS HALL OF FAME
By
George Banker Running was a natural fit for Hedy Marque of Alexandria,
Virginia. For some athletes to perfect their level of performance, it
requires years of training. Marque was born in 1917, Tempelhof, Berlin,
Germany across from the old airport. The airport (Tempelhof) was heavily
used during the Berlin airlifts in 1948-49.
Marque is one of the rare athletes who quietly came onto the
running scenes. Marque came
to the United States in 1947. It was not until 1964 when Marque entered
her first race, the Diet Pepsi 10K in Wichita, Kansas.
Marque was always the quiet type of runner who stayed focused
during the races and concentrated on her athletic abilities. Marque never
displayed to be the serious competitive runner but waited for the crowds
to thin out and then settled into a steady pace. At the 13th Army Ten-Miler in 1997, “It took me
so long to get to the start. The race is so large and once it was started
it was okay. The course was nice and I was passing people and they were
passing me,” said 80-year old, Hedy Marque (1:38:21). The preparation
for the running events did not include track or speed work outs but only
low key training runs that included walking which was done with her
daughter, Marjorie. Marque once stated, “The only way to beat your competition
is to outlive them”. Time
has proved to back up the statement. Looking over the performance list,
the times surpassed the competition of the younger runners. Marque often
frustrated other runners because she would pass them and they could not
offer a defense to cover her moves. On
any given day, Marque would give her best. At the age of 77 at the Annapolis 10 Mile Run, which was held
in August where it was a hilly course, Marque commented after, “The race
was hot and I had to walk some of it”, and she managed to take a first
place in her age division. The list of road performances displayed dominance in the
Washington, DC area which has not been matched by any other age group
contender. Marque was a local figure at the top 10-mile races, Annapolis
10 Mile Run, Army Ten-Miler, Cherry Blossom, and the George Washington
Parkway Classic 15K. There was a consistency of effort which earned her
the respect. Each time Marque approached the award stage, she was greeted
with cheers from the local runners. At the 1993 Central Fidelity 8K in Alexandria, Virginia, the
event offered prize money based upon age graded times. The event included
top Nike runners like Lynn Jennings (1992 Olympian) and Anne Marie Letko.
Marque shared the award stage as being within the top 10 age graded
winners at the age of 76 (Non-age graded time was 40:44). Marque is now 95 and enjoys her days of walking. The
distinction of being inducted into the USA Track and Field Masters Hall of
Fame is well deserved for a person who has served as a role model to the
younger athletes. Marque will never know the lives of the many runners she
touched by sharing the roads with them. Marque is an athlete who lives
within the Potomac Valley Association of USA Track and Field and
participated in the various sanctioned events. Congratulations to Hedy Marque. American
