Race walking is an event contested in all levels
of the sport of track & field, from youth athletics up to and including
the Olympic Games. A technically demanding event, race walking is
continuing to grow in popularity across all age groups for its fitness
and competitive aspects.
Race walking differs from running in that it requires the competitor to
maintain contact with the ground and straighten their front knee when
the foot makes contact with the ground, keeping it straightened until
the knee passes under the body.
Judges evaluate the technique of race walkers and
report fouls which may lead to disqualification. All judging is done by
the eye of the judge and no outside technology is used in making judging
decisions.
Check the USATF Missouri Valley Calendar
for regional and national race walk events.
In addition, race walk events often are
held in conjunction with other major track and field competitions
across the country. More information is available from USA Track and
Field at

| SPOTLIGHT: Heartland
Race Walkers The Heartland Race Walkers
compete regionally and nationally, and are particularly
successful at the state and national Senior Olympics.
Jean Brunnenkant has won gold medals in
three different age divisions at the nationals and will be
going for a fourth set in the 90-94 division in Louisville
in June 2007. The club made a good showing at the
recently-concluded Kansas State Senior Olympics in Topeka.
Race walkers in the club, or helped by
the club, range in age from 12 to 90.
In 2006, club members helped train two
young girls who
competed in AAU and USATF events, and both won medals in
their divisions. One went to the national Junior Olympics in
the USATF in Norfolk and took 5th (Kiara Bunton) and the
other went to the national AAU Junior Olympics in Baltimore.
In addition, the club has been
instrumental in establishing race walking divisions in
various road races, particularly in the Kansas City area.
